Today's Stoic Thought

“The fundamental human fallacy: the illusion that a change in external circumstances will lead to permanent bliss. That the attainment of a future goal will make you satisfied forever. The illusion is so entrenched that it persists despite being refuted by repeated experience. ”
@TheAncientSage

In modern life, people often believe that getting a promotion or a new car will bring everlasting happiness. However, once achieved, the excitement fades, and they are left seeking the next big thing. This cycle shows the fallacy of relying on external events for lasting contentment. For example, someone may think that buying the latest smartphone will bring them joy, but soon they'll be looking forward to the next model, perpetuating a cycle of temporary excitement.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
Matthew 6:19-20 ESV

The Bible verse advises storing treasures in heaven rather than on earth, highlighting the importance of seeking enduring spiritual fulfillment rather than transient material possessions. It aligns with the Stoic idea that true contentment comes from within, not from external circumstances.
